Microsoft is reportedly preparing Windows 11 version 27H2 as a major operating system update in 2027, rather than launching Windows 12. According to The Verge, the company wants to focus on improving performance, reliability, and overall quality.

Windows 11 27H2 could bring bigger changes than 25H2 and 26H2

Microsoft reportedly plans to release Windows 11 27H2 as a full operating system upgrade, similar to version 24H2 in 2024.

Unlike Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2, which used smaller enablement packages, 27H2 could introduce more substantial changes to the operating system.

The company is reportedly prioritizing performance, stability, and reliability following ongoing criticism of Windows 11.

Microsoft has already made efforts to reduce resource usage, recently claiming better performance on PCs with 8GB of RAM. Independent tests also found that Windows 11 26H2 uses 1.2GB less RAM than version 25H2.

Given the larger scope of 27H2, Microsoft could begin Windows Insider testing earlier than usual in 2027.

Microsoft could replace Windows 11’s Bloom wallpaper

Microsoft is also reportedly preparing new default wallpapers to replace the Bloom design that debuted with Windows 11 in 2021.

The company could unveil the new designs at Microsoft Ignite in November 2026, followed by a broader rollout in January 2027.

The wallpapers will reportedly feature folded sheets of color surrounded by clouds. Microsoft is also said to be developing separate designs for Windows 11 Pro and consumer PCs, with themes focused on gaming, productivity, creativity, and performance.

Windows 12 might not arrive in 2027

Microsoft’s reported plans suggest that the company wants to improve Windows 11 rather than introduce Windows 12 next year.

However, Microsoft has not officially confirmed Windows 11 27H2 as its next major update or ruled out a Windows 12 release.

For now, the company appears to be focusing on addressing Windows 11’s existing problems through a larger update instead of launching an entirely new version of Windows.

In other Microsoft news, a recently discovered Microsoft Paint security flaw could allow attackers to execute malicious code, although users may have trouble finding the fix.
