Microsoft has outlined its OneDrive roadmap for 2026, focusing heavily on AI integration, faster workflows, and improved collaboration tools. The update positions OneDrive as more than just cloud storage, evolving it into a central productivity hub within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Copilot Integration Takes Center Stage

A key highlight is deeper integration with Copilot, which now appears directly inside OneDrive. Users can summarize documents, review PDFs, and compare files without leaving the platform.

This builds on earlier AI additions, including agent-based features already introduced across Microsoft services.

Expanded File Support and Editing

Microsoft is also expanding file support. OneDrive will now handle Markdown (.md) files natively, allowing users to view and edit them directly in the browser.

This change targets developers and content creators who rely on lightweight file formats for documentation and publishing.

Mobile and Accessibility Improvements

On mobile, improvements focus on accessibility and convenience. OCR support for PDFs allows users to extract text from scanned documents.

iPad users gain offline search functionality, making files easier to locate without an internet connection.

Smarter Sharing and Access Control

Sharing and file management are also getting upgrades. The new “Hero link” feature simplifies sharing by offering a single link with flexible permissions.

Microsoft is also improving ownership transfer, making it easier for organizations to reassign files when employees leave.

Desktop Enhancements on Windows and macOS

Desktop experiences see notable enhancements as well. On Windows, users can move folders to OneDrive directly from File Explorer with a right-click.

Group Policy updates allow admins to customize the OneDrive folder root to avoid path length issues, while Copilot+ PCs gain semantic search in File Explorer for more natural file discovery.

Preview Features and Future Direction

Preview features push scalability further. OneDrive Sync will support up to one million files on supported Windows Insider systems.

A new “Ask Copilot” button in File Explorer is also in testing, signaling deeper AI integration across the OS.

Microsoft’s broader direction is clear: OneDrive is becoming an AI-powered workspace designed to streamline how users create, manage, and share files. This aligns with recent Microsoft 365 changes, including Copilot Mobile uploading local files directly to OneDrive and updates to how deleted cloud files are handled locally.
