Microsoft Says RGB Software Is Behind KB5121003-Linked Crashes

Microsoft has completed its investigation into Windows 11 gaming crashes that were previously linked to KB5121003, and the update itself is not to blame.

RGB software is causing Windows 11 gaming crashes

According to Microsoft, the crashes happen because some RGB control applications install drivers or components similar to inpoutx64.

The inpoutx64 system driver can create compatibility problems when affected games launch. Microsoft also notes that RGB software may install these components without users realizing it.

Microsoft previously shared a temporary workaround that disables inpoutx64 through the Windows Registry.

However, disabling the driver can also break RGB lighting features on connected peripherals, PC components, or their control software.

Microsoft is now blocking the problematic driver

Microsoft has started rolling out an automatic fix that prevents inpoutx64 from loading.

For now, the block targets PCs where the driver is enabled and ARC Raiders is installed. Windows disables the driver automatically and displays a notification explaining the change. ARC Raiders should then launch normally.

Microsoft is also working to expand the same protection to PCs running MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Embark Studios has already resolved the related problem affecting THE FINALS.

The fix may take up to 24 hours to arrive

Microsoft is deploying the resolution automatically to unmanaged consumer and business PCs. Users need to restart Windows after receiving the fix.

The company says the rollout can take around 24 hours to reach affected devices.

Microsoft will also include the inpoutx64 driver block in the September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates.

Enterprise-managed PCs will require intervention from IT administrators instead of receiving the consumer fix automatically.

KB5121003 has caused other problems as well. The update also prevents Teams and Outlook from running on some ARM64 devices.
