Microsoft Sets October 5 Deadline for Teams Live Chat
Microsoft will retire Teams live chat support on October 5, 2026, ending a feature that routes customer inquiries from company websites directly into Teams channels.
According to Message Center MC1449174, embedded website chat widgets will stop working after the deadline, and new visitor messages will no longer reach Teams.
The change affects Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, and Business Premium customers. Microsoft already blocked customers from creating new live chat configurations in August, so the October shutdown primarily affects organizations that still use existing deployments.
Teams live chat will stop routing website inquiries
Teams live chat currently lets businesses connect website visitors with an up-to-25-person collaboration thread inside Teams.
Microsoft will remove that functionality on October 5. However, existing chat transcripts and historical content stored in Teams channels will remain available according to normal Microsoft 365 retention policies.
There is no opt-out or postponement for the retirement, and Microsoft plans to apply the change globally.
Admins need to remove website chat scripts
Organizations still using Teams live chat should audit their websites before October 5 and remove embedded chat scripts that use the ID chatbot.
Admins should also notify internal support teams that customer inquiries from website chat widgets will no longer appear inside Teams after the retirement date.
Microsoft has not announced a direct free replacement for the feature. Instead, the company is directing customers toward paid alternatives such as Dynamics 365 Contact Center and Microsoft Copilot Studio contact center.
The change comes as Microsoft continues adjusting its Teams lineup. The company recently detailed Microsoft Teams August and September updates with Copilot and meeting improvements.
Microsoft is also putting advanced Teams events behind Enterprise licensing and removing Copilot from the Teams chat list.
