Microsoft to launch hardware-accelerated BitLocker on Windows 11 in 2026
Faster, more secure disk encryption coming to new devices
Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will get a major update for BitLocker encryption in 2026. The company says the new “hardware-accelerated BitLocker” will use dedicated hardware to encrypt data faster, taking the load off the CPU and improving overall performance.
According to Microsoft, the update moves cryptographic operations from the main processor to specialized hardware. Encryption keys will be wrapped and isolated at the silicon level, which helps reduce exposure to CPU and memory vulnerabilities while providing stronger protection for sensitive data. The company says this approach raises the bar for disk-level security on supported devices.
BitLocker has been part of Windows since Vista and is now enabled by default on all new Windows 11 installations. It ensures that data on a device is protected, even if the laptop is stolen or the hard drive is removed and accessed elsewhere. Users signed in with a Microsoft account can retrieve their BitLocker keys from the cloud through the Microsoft Account portal.
Microsoft emphasizes that users who prefer can still disable BitLocker if they choose, though the new approach promises both faster encryption and stronger security at the silicon level.
