Microsoft Word Now Lets You Link Straight to Specific Text

Microsoft Word’s new Copy Link to Location feature lets users share a link that opens a document directly at a specific piece of highlighted text.

Microsoft has introduced the Copy Link to Location feature in Word for Windows and Mac, giving users a faster way to point collaborators to an exact part of a document.

Instead of asking someone to scroll through a long file, users can highlight the relevant text, generate a link, and send it directly.

Word can now link directly to highlighted text

The feature does not require a heading, bookmark, or existing hyperlink. Users can create a link to almost any selected section of a supported Word document.

To use it, highlight the text you want to share, right-click the selected text, select Copy Link to Location, and then share the generated link.

Opening the link takes the recipient directly to the selected location. Microsoft says the link can work in Word on desktop or in a web browser.

The feature should prove especially useful for large reports, shared documents, and files where collaborators need to discuss one exact paragraph or section.

Word for the web has one limitation

Word for the web does not currently appear to offer the option to create Copy Link to Location links.

However, users can still open links generated from Word for Windows or Mac in the web version and jump directly to the referenced text.

Microsoft currently supports the feature on:

• Windows: Version 2605, Build 20011.20000 or later
• Mac: Version 16.109, Build 26051019 or later

Microsoft highlights content collaboration, feedback reviews, team communication, and direct navigation as some of the main use cases.

The company has made several other Office changes recently. Microsoft faces backlash over an unremovable Office upgrade banner, while it also paused the removal of People Card in Outlook Classic.

Microsoft is also unifying Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single app.
