Microsoft’s Bing Wallpaper App Is Turning Windows 11 Desktop Into Ad Space
Bing Wallpaper is showing full-screen Harry Potter ads on some Windows PCs, turning Microsoft’s rotating desktop backgrounds into a promotional surface for the 11-film Harry Potter + Fantastic Beasts collection.
According to Windows Latest, the promotion appeared through the dedicated Bing Wallpaper app, although not every PC received it.
Bing Wallpaper users are seeing a full-screen Harry Potter promotion
The advertisement replaces the normal desktop wallpaper with artwork promoting the Harry Potter + Fantastic Beasts 11-film collection.
Bing Wallpaper automatically rotates images, and Microsoft can vary those images by region. As a result, the promotion does not appear on every Windows PC running the app.
Microsoft also notes on the Bing Wallpaper download page that users may receive in-app notifications containing promotional offers, although a full desktop advertisement goes beyond the type of notification some users may expect.
Not every Windows PC is getting the same wallpaper
This was tested on four PCs on the same day and found the Harry Potter promotion on only one of them.
Members of the Harry Potter community have also reported seeing the promotion, suggesting that the wallpaper has reached multiple users.
The reports specifically involve Microsoft’s dedicated Bing Wallpaper app. It remains unclear whether Microsoft has also distributed the advertisement through Windows 11’s built-in Spotlight feature.
Spotlight also relies on Bing-supplied imagery, but it generally changes desktop backgrounds less frequently than the standalone Bing Wallpaper app.
Microsoft has not commented on the Bing Wallpaper ad
Microsoft had not responded to questions about the promotion at the time of publication.
The company has repeatedly used its software to promote its own products and services. Microsoft previously created a dedicated app that installs a Bing extension across supported browsers.
Microsoft has also been spotted pushing Edge users to switch to Bing as their default search engine.
The Harry Potter promotion shows that Bing Wallpaper can also serve promotional content directly on the Windows desktop, although its rotating and region-dependent nature means many users may never see the ad.
