Microsoft has updated the Windows Media Creation Tool to include the latest May 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for both Windows 11 and Windows 10, as Neowin reports.

The refreshed installation media now ships with newer cumulative updates already integrated, helping users perform cleaner installs with fewer updates required immediately after setup.

Updated Windows installation images are now available in Media Creation Tool

The Media Creation Tool now downloads refreshed Windows 11 25H2 and Windows 11 24H2 installation builds with cumulative updates already included. The newest Windows 11 25H2 image currently contains build 26200.8457 through update KB5089549.

Microsoft also integrated newer Microsoft Defender definitions into the installation media.

Using newer installation images can significantly reduce post-install update time for users creating USB installers, bootable recovery media, or fresh deployment environments.

The newer images also help streamline reinstall and recovery workflows because systems start from a more recent patched state immediately after installation.

KB5089549 recently fixed BitLocker recovery problems

Earlier this week, Microsoft released KB5087544 for Windows 10 and KB5089549 for Windows 11 as part of the May 2026 Patch Tuesday rollout.

Some users reportedly encountered installation failures with KB5089549, although reports currently appear limited rather than widespread. The Windows 11 update also fixed incorrect BitLocker recovery prompts that affected some devices.

Interestingly, Microsoft updated the downloadable installation builds without updating the Media Creation Tool version number itself.

The utility still reports version 10.0.26100.7019 despite now delivering newer Windows installation images.
