Kratos isn’t going anywhere. As reported by IGN earlier today, at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Sony’s Santa Monica Studio officially confirmed a new God of War game starring the Ghost of Sparta is already in development. The announcement comes just weeks after the studio revealed God of War Laufey, which shifts the spotlight to Faye for the first time.

The new God of War game will continue Kratos’ story

The confirmation came from Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog during the game’s SDCC panel. While Barlog didn’t reveal gameplay, platforms, or a release window, he confirmed the new God of War game will launch after God of War Laufey and connect directly to its story.

That means Laufey won’t mark the end of Kratos’ journey. Instead, it appears to set up the next major chapter for PlayStation’s most iconic warrior.

God of War Laufey lands first

Before Kratos returns, players will step into the boots of Laufey, better known as Faye. The upcoming adventure follows her journey through the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from multiple mythologies battle for power. She must protect the future she created for Kratos and Atreus before it’s undone.

Sony also confirmed God of War Laufey launches exclusively for PS5 on February 16, 2027. As you may know, God of War Ragnarök was Kratos’ last mainline adventure in 2022. Fans have wondered what would come next ever since Laufey was announced.

Speaking of fan reactions, the SDCC reveal quickly sparked excitement across Reddit, with many celebrating Kratos’ confirmed return while already speculating about the next mythology Santa Monica could explore.
