New World MMORPG Is Shutting Down as Amazon Delists the Game

new world shutdown

Amazon has confirmed that New World: Aeternum, its flagship MMORPG developed by Amazon Games, is officially winding down, marking the end of one of the most ambitious MMO launches on Steam.

According to Windows Central, Amazon delisted New World from Steam and other digital storefronts on January 15, 2026. New players can no longer purchase the game, but existing owners will still have access until servers shut down permanently on January 31, 2027.

New World MMORPG announces shutdown

Amazon previously announced it would stop active development on New World, including all future expansions and major content updates. That decision now transitions into a full sunset plan.

Starting July 20, 2026, players will no longer be able to purchase in-game currency or make additional in-game purchases. However, Amazon says it will continue monitoring performance and fixing critical bugs to ensure the game remains stable until the final shutdown date.

Current content will remain playable

The ongoing Nighthaven season and all currently available content will continue running through the end of service. Amazon has also published a detailed blog post outlining what players can expect during the remaining lifespan of the game and how the shutdown process will unfold.

New World launched with massive interest and quickly became one of Steam’s most-played MMORPGs, but player counts declined over time as Amazon struggled to maintain momentum in the highly competitive MMO space.

In related gaming headlines, Microsoft recently leaked the release date for Forza Horizon 6, while Xbox Game Pass expanded its Stream Your Own Game library with 48 additional titles.

Sports fans can also jump into Xbox Free Play Days and try several popular EA Sports games for a limited time.
