Nintendo Reveals ‘The Legend of Zelda’ Movie Title, Miyamoto Says You’ll Know Why It Has No Subtitle

Nintendo has finally revealed the official title of its upcoming live-action Zelda movie, and there is no subtitle at all. The movie will simply be called The Legend of Zelda, with Shigeru Miyamoto saying there is a reason for the decision that will become clear once people watch the film.

Nintendo shared the title during today’s The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, confirming that the movie is not being named after any particular game in the series. That is notable considering how many different stories, timelines, and versions of Hyrule Nintendo could have used as the basis for the film.

Miyamoto explained that this is an original movie based on the main stories, ideas, and concepts that have been built through the Zelda games over the last 40 years. He also confirmed that Nintendo and the development team are involved in the production alongside the wider filmmaking team.

There is still very little known about the actual story. Miyamoto did, however, point toward one of the most important parts of Zelda lore when he mentioned the Triforce and asked what role it could play in the film. Nintendo did not provide an answer, leaving that detail open for now.

The decision to use The Legend of Zelda as the complete title could also mean Nintendo does not want to tie the movie to one specific game. It appears the studio is instead treating the film as its own interpretation of the series, while keeping its main ideas and characters intact.

Nintendo has not revealed much beyond the title and its basic direction, so it is still unclear how closely the movie will follow the games or how much new material it will introduce. What we do know is that The Legend of Zelda will arrive in theaters on April 30, 2027. Nintendo says more details will be shared later.
