OpenAI co-founder and ex-Tesla AI director, Andrej Karpathy, has officially joined Anthropic, adding yet another major name to the company’s rapidly growing roster of talent. The announcement came directly from Karpathy via a post on X, where he said the next few years of large language model development are going to be “especially formative.”

Karpathy also revealed that he’s returning to full-time research and development work. Meanwhile, Anthropic confirmed he will begin this week and lead a new effort focused on accelerating pretraining research using Claude. In simple terms, this is the stage where models build their foundational knowledge and capabilities before becoming public-facing products.

Anthropic keeps stacking major talent

At a time when competition between OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI is becoming increasingly aggressive, Karpathy’s move feels significant. Anthropic has been quietly building momentum over the past few months, reportedly positioning itself to rival OpenAI more directly both financially and technologically.

Interestingly, Karpathy’s career path has crossed through nearly every major player in modern AI. After co-founding OpenAI, he left in 2017 after being recruited by Elon Musk to join Tesla and lead the computer vision team behind Autopilot.

Earlier this month, former xAI founding member Ross Nordeen also joined Anthropic, while the company simultaneously struck a compute partnership deal with SpaceX tied to xAI’s Colossus data center.

With Anthropic now pulling talent from OpenAI, Tesla, and xAI almost simultaneously, the battle for the people building tomorrow’s models may be getting just as intense as the technology race itself.
