OpenAI Launches Codex App for macOS, Expanding Multi-Agent Workflows

If you have been waiting for a dedicated Codex app for macOS, well, it’s here. OpenAI just announced it. So, what’s new about it, you may ask, right? Well, you get a desktop interface designed to help developers orchestrate multiple AI agents, run tasks in parallel, and collaborate on long-running projects.

Codex App for macOS organizes agents and extends workflows

The app is now available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users, with a limited-time rollout to Free and Go plans. The Codex app looks to revolutionize software development by giving users a command center for agents. Thanks to the new app, developers can assign work across multiple agents, review changes in real time, comment on diffs, and even open edits directly in their IDE.

Moving on, the built-in worktree support allows agents to work on the same repository without conflicts. This allows for separating their changes while maintaining local code integrity. Skills is one of the best agents introduced with the Codex macOS app.

It helps extend Codex beyond code generation to handle tasks like information gathering, web development, image creation, and document management. You can create, assign, and share skills across teams, enabling Codex to complete tasks with minimal supervision.

Execution-focused style, security, and future updates

Automations let Codex run repetitive tasks on a schedule, from bug triage to release briefs. Developers can also customize agent personalities, which allows them to choose between a terse, execution-focused style or a more conversational, empathetic approach.

OpenAI says that it hasn’t compromised on the security, either. Sandboxing and permission controls restrict agents to specific folders or cached web data, ensuring safe execution of elevated tasks. The company has further promised that the Codex app will continue evolving, including Windows support, cloud-triggered automations, and faster inference, making it a full-featured hub for multi-agent workflows.
