Late last month, OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5.6 was on the way and introduced three new AI models designed for different performance and pricing tiers. The lineup includes GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna. While introducing the new models, the company also confirmed that GPT-5.6 Sol model has entered a limited preview. Now, OpenAI’s CEO has shared the official release date of GPT-5.6 Sol, and it’s coming tomorrow, July 9th.

GPT-5.6 Sol leads OpenAI’s newest AI model lineup, and it’s releasing tomorrow

Unlike previous model launches, OpenAI isn’t opening the doors to everyone immediately. GPT-5.6 Sol is currently available only to a small group of trusted partners. According to the company, the limited rollout follows discussions with the U.S. government, which requested that the initial deployment remain restricted to selected organizations. OpenAI also clarified that it doesn’t believe this should become the standard process for future AI releases.

GPT-5.6 Sol sits at the top of a three-model lineup that also includes GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna. While Terra is positioned as a lower-cost option for everyday professional workloads and Luna focuses on speed and affordability, Sol is designed for advanced reasoning, software development, scientific research, cybersecurity, and complex AI agents.

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol introduces new “max” and “ultra” reasoning modes for tackling more demanding tasks. In the company’s internal testing, Sol achieved 91.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1, outperforming Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5. Developers also gain more predictable prompt caching, including guaranteed cache retention for at least 30 minutes and explicit cache breakpoints to improve API efficiency.

Speaking of availability, select customers can reportedly reach processing speeds of up to 750 tokens per second. Broader access across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API is expected to begin rolling out over the coming weeks, although the company hasn’t shared an exact public release date yet.
