OpenAI Reopens Sign-Ups for Its $200 Pro Plan

OpenAI has reopened its $200-per-month Pro subscription to new users today after temporarily putting new sign-ups on hold as demand for GPT-6 Astra put additional pressure on the company’s infrastructure. The confirmation came via a post on X by Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product leader overseeing core products including Codex and ChatGPT.

Sottiaux shared the update on X, explaining that OpenAI is changing how usage is calculated for the $200 plan. He says that after the change, the subscription will effectively provide around half the previous dollar value in API spend, while users should still be able to get more work done than they could with the same plan a month ago.

The company says it is making the change without bringing back the 5-hour usage limit for Pro subscribers. According to Sottiaux, users will continue to have access to their weekly allowance without that shorter window being reintroduced.

OpenAI previously restored the 5-hour limit for Plus users while keeping it disabled for the $100 and $200 Pro plans. Sottiaux also argues that the value of the subscription should increase over time as models become more efficient. Rather than keeping API prices artificially high and using discounts to make subscriptions appear more generous, OpenAI wants to continue lowering API prices as model capabilities improve.

That approach is already visible in OpenAI’s latest pricing changes, according to Sottiaux, who says the company introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna at 50% of their previous price. Sottiaux also teased that OpenAI is adding more features to the subscription that will not consume usage, but he has not revealed what those features are yet. He said more announcements are coming tomorrow.
