Ever since Jony Ive joined hands with OpenAI, there has been growing chatter around the company’s AI-powered device. When both announced the partnership, Ive’s startup, io, shared a promotional video confirming the 2026 launch window. Now that we’re in 2026, the first official word from OpenAI related to its AI device launch has just surfaced online.

OpenAI is eyeing the second half of 2026 to launch its first AI device

According to Axios, OpenAI is eyeing a launch for its AI device in the second half of 2026. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Global Chief Affairs Officer, reportedly also confirmed that the device is “on track” for a late-2026 launch. Notably, this is the very first time someone from the company has shared information related to the long-rumored AI device.

Lehane reportedly declined to confirm what form the device might take, whether a pin, an earpiece, or something entirely different. He did, however, list “devices” as a major focus for OpenAI in 2026. Additional details about these devices would emerge much later in the year.

While Lehane stopped short of confirming a commercial launch timeline, he noted that late 2026 remains the most likely target, based on how development progresses.

The first AI device could be earbuds

Earlier this month, a detailed report by a Weibo tipster offered a closer look at the AI hardware, which is rumored to be AI earbuds. Internally, the pea-shaped AI earbuds from OpenAI are codenamed “Sweetpea.” If that report turns out to be accurate, OpenAI could present significant competition to the likes of Apple AirPods and Galaxy Buds.

Apart from the design and functionality, the report also noted that OpenAI has gone with Foxconn to manufacture its first AI device. Considering that Foxconn’s relationship with Apple has reportedly been eroding over time, the partnership with OpenAI might give it a boost during a challenging period.

Let’s assume OpenAI is launching the AI earbuds later this year. Do you think it could shake up the market? Do let us know in the comments below.
