OpenAI GPT Store featuring various chatbots

The GPT store of OpenAI is not the platform where developers showcase their chatbots as we were expecting. Also, it doesn’t make it easy for us to pick secure generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs). It is the opposite because it harbors various spam and impersonation Bots.

Also, many chatbots available there break the rules. For example, some hide that they are AI, and others that impersonate celebrities. Their presence could jeopardize ChatGPT, especially in the EU, since the AI Act is almost here. According to its regulations, ChatGPT might become an unacceptable risk AI.

Do I need to pay for the GPT store?

You have to pay $20 monthly to use the OpenAI GPT store because you need ChatGPT Plus to access most features. So, if you are not an enthusiast of AI or don’t have a way to get your money’s worth, it would cost you $240 yearly for a product you don’t need. Additionally, you could use the LM Studio instead, which allows you to use local large language models (LLMs).

The OpenAI GPT store has been facing many problems lately due to spam bots and GPT models that break the rules. For example, you might already know how harshly Disney treats people who violate their copyrights, and you can find on the store chatbots featuring Star Wars and Marvel themes. However, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act might protect the company from lawsuits.

In addition, the store holds a plethora of problematic chatbots known as humanizers. They claim to pass detection, and their text is supposedly similar to ours. So, others could use them to trick us. Also, in the store, you could find bots capable of generating adult content or who mimic famous people.

To ban illegal and problematic chatbots, OpenAI has a mix of security protocols based on automatic checks, human reviews, and user reports. Yet, they are not fast enough to deal with the 3 million custom chatbots in the GPT store.

Ultimately, the OpenAI GPT store is a luxury you don’t need unless you use ChatGPT a lot. Even then, there are various free chatbot models that you could try from other sources. So, until the company solves the challenges, the store is just a platform for dangerous tools.

What are your thoughts? Is it worth paying for ChatGPT Plus to access the GPTs available? Let us know in the comments.
