OpenAI's New AI Image Model, ChatGPT Images 2.0, Is Now Official

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Images 2.0, a new image generation model designed to push beyond standard text-to-image tools and into structured design work. The update, announced during a livestream, also lands alongside expanded efforts for Codex in enterprise through a new Codex Labs initiative.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 targets design-level output

At a time when AI image tools are rapidly converging, OpenAI is leaning into a more ambitious direction. ChatGPT Images 2.0 is being positioned not just as a generator, but as a system capable of building structured visual layouts, including multi-page content like magazines.

The company demonstrated how the model can handle more complex creative workflows, including layouts that go beyond single images. It also highlights improved text rendering, which has long been a weak point in earlier image generation systems.

That being said, the most noticeable change appears to be how images are constructed around instructions, with better control over spacing, typography, and composition.

Higher resolution, web-aware generation, and dual modes

Speaking of capabilities, ChatGPT Images 2.0 now supports up to 2K resolution and multiple aspect ratios, giving users more flexibility for different formats. OpenAI also says the model can generate images in both Instant and Thinking modes, depending on how much reasoning is required.

The Thinking mode is particularly important here. It allows the model to pull in up-to-date web information before generating visuals, which may help improve accuracy in data-driven or reference-heavy images. On top of that, language support has been expanded beyond Latin scripts, improving output quality for languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi, and others, where earlier systems often struggled with text clarity.

The ChatGPT Images 2.0 Instant model is now rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users, while the more advanced Thinking model is limited to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business tiers.
