Reddit Will Soon Enforce Mandatory Logins to Curb AI Scraping
Many social media platforms have already restricted what visitors can see without an account, and Reddit now appears ready to follow suit. The company plans to test mandatory logins in select markets outside the US, potentially ending nearly two decades of largely open browsing. The move also raises questions about privacy, search traffic, and access to online discussions.
Reddit wants visitors to sign in before browsing
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman outlined the plan alongside the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings results. According to reports, testing will begin in selected international markets during the fourth quarter, although a broader rollout timeline remains unclear.
The change could affect people who regularly open Reddit threads through Google Search without signing in. Instead of immediately reading discussions, visitors may need to create an account or log into an existing one. Reddit has yet to explain exactly what logged-out visitors will see under the proposed system.
Speaking of the reasons behind this decision, Reddit says the move could improve the browsing experience, support advertising, and limit unauthorized data scraping. AI companies increasingly rely on online discussions to develop their products, making access to user-generated content an increasingly important issue.
Falling search traffic adds pressure
The announcement comes as Reddit faces challenges attracting visitors through traditional search engines. In October, search referrals reportedly declined by more than one million per week on average. Reddit also warned that daily active unique visitors could fall by a low double-digit percentage during the fourth quarter if the trend continues.
That said, the strategy comes with a trade-off. Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, up 53% year over year, but its daily active unique users reached 130.3 million, below expectations. A stricter login policy may improve monetization while making casual browsing less convenient.
What this means for Reddit users
Reddit’s decision could also change how its communities appear across the wider internet. Search engines have long helped users discover public discussions without requiring accounts. If access becomes restricted, some threads may become harder to reach, although the full impact remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, Reddit says it will continue licensing data to third parties, including AI companies. The company is also reportedly rebuilding its app’s incognito mode, suggesting it wants to balance account-based access with some privacy protections.
