Roblox Announces Age-Based Accounts with Expanded Parental Controls for Users Under 16
Age verification now required to make sure users are at least 9 years old
After announcing facial age verification for chat worldwide in January, Roblox has now announced a major update that changes how younger users access games. The company today detailed the new age-based accounts and expanded parental controls set to roll out in early June. The decision comes at a time Roblox is facing scrutiny for child safety on its platform.
Roblox splits younger users into Kids and Select tiers
As part of the latest overhaul, the platform is adding two new account types, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. Kids will cover ages five to eight, while Select will apply to users aged nine to 15, based on age checks or parental verification.
Notably, each tier comes with its own limits. “Kids” accounts will only see games rated Minimal or Mild, while Select accounts will allow access up to Moderate content. Roblox says this setup is meant to better match what users see with where they are developmentally. Communication within the platform is also getting a major change, with chat now turned off by default for younger Kids accounts. Whereas the “Select” users will have more access, though still under safety controls.
Users will move between tiers automatically as they grow older, shifting from Kids to Select at age nine, and then into standard accounts at 16. Anyone who skips age verification will still be placed into the most restricted group.
Developers face stricter rules as controls expand
Roblox is also limiting how games qualify for younger audiences. Developers will need verification, stronger security settings, and additional checks before their games can appear in Kids or Select libraries. On top of that, the company is adding continuous review systems that track reports, moderation signals, and real-time safety checks to decide what stays available for younger players.
Moving on, parents are also getting more control. They will be able to block specific games, manage chat access, and approve experiences that would otherwise be restricted until age 16. Last but not least, Roblox is also moving toward global rating systems like ESRB and PEGI later this year.
