OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has found a rather funny way to respond to the internet’s latest RAM controversy. The CEO has changed his X display name to “Ram Altman” after a user suggested the name. Interestingly, Altman played along while defending his earlier comments about global memory supplies.

Sam Altman embraces the RAM joke after online backlash

The name change followed a wave of jokes about Altman’s recent remarks on personal computer memory. During an appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast, he questioned whether keeping large amounts of DRAM in personal computers was an efficient use of limited supplies.

Altman argued that many computers use their installed memory only around 5% of the time. He suggested that cloud data centers could make better use of those resources.

Naturally, PC enthusiasts were not particularly impressed. The comments came amid a global memory shortage, with AI infrastructure demand putting additional pressure on memory supplies.

The situation soon turned into a meme fest on X. One user asked Altman to rename his account to “Ram Altman.” He responded with “ok yeah” and actually made the change.

Another user joked about the exchange, prompting Altman to explain why he accepted the suggestion. His response made the situation even more entertaining.

Altman says he wants everyone to have more RAM

Altman clarified that he genuinely wants people to have as much memory as they want in their computers. He also complained that his earlier comments had been taken out of context.

“I have been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time,” he added.

In another reply, Altman told a user, “i want you to have so much ram” before adding, “lets build more.”

That clarification may help explain his position, but it does not erase the original criticism. Consumers are already facing pressure from rising hardware costs, while AI companies continue expanding their data center operations.

Altman’s temporary internet makeover has certainly made the discussion more entertaining. However, will increased memory production actually ease the pressure on PC buyers? That’s something only time will tell.
