Samsung Display, it appears, has won a contract to provide micro OLED displays for Microsoft’s new mixed reality (MR) headset. MicroOLED, or OLEDoS (organic light-emitting diode on silicon), is a new advancement in display technology. It has many advantages compared to regular OLED displays. These include better power efficiency, improved luminance, infinite contrast, and higher refresh rate.

For example, imagine a screen with over 4000 ppi resolution in only 1 inch. Apple Vision Pro already uses micro-OLED displays, which give clear pictures with good color. Samsung Display also participated in MWC 2024 and presented micro OLED displays designed for XR headsets.

As per The Elec, Samsung Display is getting ready to provide these advanced displays to Microsoft. It is believed that they will be used in a mixed-reality headset. The agreement covers hundreds of thousands of units, giving an idea of how big Microsoft’s plans are for their MR area. Microsoft is said to be working on an MR device emphasizing games and media, separating from its HoloLens range centered around productivity. Yet, this new MR gadget for entertainment purposes might not be ready for the commercial market before 2026.

This advancement is surprising, particularly when considering Microsoft’s large deal with the US Department of Defense for HoloLens-based headsets. How will Microsoft manage its military duties while shifting towards an entertainment-oriented path?

Additionally, the cooperation between Samsung Display and Microsoft in micro OLED technology might alter the balance in the display market and mixed reality (MR) tech. The focus now turns towards the future of Microsoft’s HoloLens and its dedication to progressing MR technology.

If you’re a tech fan or game player or are amazed by how fast display technology and mixed reality are changing, this development shows that we have even more exciting things coming up. The partnership between Samsung Display and Microsoft might change the MR experience and establish fresh norms for what’s achievable in immersive entertainment and other areas.
