Sony Confirms PS5 Pro PSSR Enhance Toggle Will Not Get Updates

xbox series x vs ps5 pro

If you recently picked up a PlayStation 5 Pro and turned on the new image enhancement option, you might expect the system to automatically upgrade that feature over time. It turns out that it will not happen. Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for PlayStation, recently confirmed that the console’s special upscaling toggle is locked to its current version and will not receive rolling system updates in the background.

Here’s why the PS5 Pro PSSR upscaler toggle will stay the same

During a recent interview with Digital Foundry, Cerny explained the logic behind this decision. He stated that the development team wants to set a fixed standard for the community. If Sony constantly updated the background parameters for the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution feature, it would become extremely difficult for players and testers to give reliable advice on when to actually use it. By keeping the toggle exactly as it is, players know what they are getting every time they switch it on.

This means if a game only supports the very first version of the upscaler, it will only benefit from the current system level improvements. If a brand new version, like a hypothetical 3.0, is ever released, the system toggle will not magically apply it to older games. To get those newer improvements, game developers will need to step in and release a manual patch for their specific titles.

For now, this fixed approach is not a major issue. The second version of the upscaler just launched and has already shown massive visual improvements in several major games. Players can still enjoy a better-looking game today, even if the system toggle itself stays the same tomorrow.
