Sony Emails PlayStation Users to Remind That Digital Games Are Licensed, Not Owned
While PlayStation fans are already protesting Sony’s plan to scrap physical game discs, another reminder from the gaming giant has landed at an awkward time. Sony is reportedly emailing users about its updated PlayStation terms, including language stating digital games are licensed rather than sold.
Sony’s terms reignite the digital ownership debate
As pointed out by The Verge’s Tom Warren on X, the email contains the PlayStation Terms of Service, Code of Conduct, Software EULA, and Privacy Policy. It was sent as a record of agreements users recently accepted. The Software EULA says digital software receives a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, personal license. That license covers private, non-commercial use on the intended device.
The terms also reportedly allow access to purchased content to end following account suspension or closure. Sony’s user-generated content terms provide broad rights to use submitted material without additional payment.
That language is not entirely new to digital storefronts. PlayStation’s existing product pages have long described software as being subject to a license.
The timing has made the email especially controversial
The reminder comes as #PSBlackout gets underway. The campaign runs from August 23 through August 30, urging players to avoid logins, purchases, and PlayStation activity. The protest follows Sony’s decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Fans argue physical releases offer stronger ownership and preservation options.
That timing has understandably frustrated some players. Many PS5 users say that the email poorly is timed, while others point out that licensing language is standard across digital platforms. Sony hasn’t indicated that the email changes ownership rights overnight. However, it appears to have just restated terms surrounding digital purchases.
