Earlier today, we reported that Sony is urging PS4 players to upgrade to PS5. Now, Sony has released a new firmware update for PS5, which bumps the system software version to 26.01-12.60.00. While the latest software update doesn’t bring any massive features or changes to the PlayStation 5, there are a few things that I’d want to talk about here.

New PS5 firmware update brings read receipts and Welcome Hub tweaks

First up, the latest firmware update for PS5 brings read receipts. Similar to messaging apps like WhatsApp, read receipts, when enabled, will let your friends know whether you’ve seen their messages. Not to mention, you can keep them turned off.

To turn on read receipts, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customise Your Privacy Settings. Under Communication and multiplayer, set the Show read receipts option to “other players on PS5” and PlayStation App to “Allow.”

Sony appears to be rolling out this feature gradually. So, if you don’t see it yet, don’t worry, you’ll eventually get it. Additionally, the latest firmware update for PS5 also brings a small but useful change to a widget in the Welcome Hub. You’ll now be able to use the Friends Activity widget to directly jump into the games that your friends are playing. Well, that’s a neat change, indeed.

Sony has also improved messaging and usability on some screens with this new PS5 firmware update. Moreover, the company mentions that the update improves software performance and stability. Not to forget, the update weighs around 1.3GB and is now available to download and install. You can get it from here.
