The Notifications API will be extended to support incoming calls notifications

If you have installed web apps lately, some of them may have requested to display notifications on Windows. Well, a new proposal on the Microsoft Edge Blog is to extend the Notifications API on web apps to include call notifications. So, you will be able to get incoming calls from web apps and even more: the developers can fully personalize these notifications with buttons, ringtones, and everything they need to stand out from others.

Right now, you can’t customize the Notifications API to customize any buttons, set a priority, or associate a ringtone to it. That is about to change if the proposal is accepted, and you can also test it if you install the code from the dedicated GitHub page. You may also get a preview of this feature.

How can I test the feature on Edge?

To test the API sample in Microsoft Edge, the document also includes a step-by-step guide:

To see the API in action, use our sample app in Microsoft Edge on Windows by using the following steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Edge on Windows from the command line with the following feature flag:
    msedge.exe --enable-features=IncomingCallNotifications
  2. Open the calls notification sample app.
  3. Install the app on Windows, by clicking the App available button in the address bar.
  4. When the app is installed and running, click the Permission button to accept notifications from the sample app.
  5. Click the Show an incoming call notification button.

If you’re a web developer working on a communication-based web app, this might be great news, because you get to experiment with the feature first-hand and even implement it ahead of time.

However, as with any new feature, it will probably take a lot of time until it gets tested and implemented. If this goes through, the developers won’t need to create dedicated Windows apps to implement incoming call notifications.

What do you think about the incoming call notifications for web apps? Is it a good thing or another distraction? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
