Spotify Adds 'AI Persona' Labels as It Cracks Down on AI-Generated Artist Identities

Spotify is drawing a clearer line between AI-assisted music and entirely artificial artist identities. The company is introducing a new AI Persona badge for artist profiles. The label arrives as generative AI makes fictional musicians increasingly difficult to distinguish.

Starting in mid-September, Spotify will show the badge across artist profiles, Search, and playlist track rows. The company says the move responds directly to listeners wanting greater transparency.

The new badge focuses on the artist, not the music

Spotify says the badge does not indicate whether AI helped create a song. Instead, it identifies profiles where the public-facing artist identity appears to be AI-generated.

Artists can disclose their AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists starting today. Spotify will also conduct its own reviews instead of relying entirely on voluntary disclosures.

The company will initially focus reviews on artists meeting certain audience thresholds. Spotify says this should cover most artist profiles that listeners regularly visit.

When Spotify applies a badge, the artist will receive a notification. They can then disclose their identity or appeal the decision.

AI Personas won’t normally appear in recommendations

There is another major change hiding behind the badge. Spotify says AI Personas will not normally appear in editorial or algorithmic recommendations.

Users could still encounter them if they specifically follow an AI Persona. The company says its recommendation systems remain focused on authentic artists building music careers.

That being said, Spotify isn’t treating every use of AI as suspicious. AI Credits already let artists explain how AI contributed to their music.

Spotify is also expanding tools such as Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, and Artist Profile Protection. Together, these features show the company’s broader push toward clearer artist identities.
