[UPDATE: NOW ONLINE] Spotify is down for many across US, UK, and Europe: Users face login and playback issues

The service is being restored partially

Spotify had a rough start to the week, with a widespread outage knocking the music streaming service offline for users across the US, the UK, and parts of Europe. Reports began surfacing on Downdetector on December 15, as thousands of users suddenly found themselves unable to stream music, log in, or even load the app properly.

At the peak of the disruption, more than 13,000 users in the US flagged issues, with most complaints pointing to the Spotify app simply not working. In the UK, close to 2,000 users reported similar problems, ranging from app failures to server-related errors.

The situation appeared to escalate quickly. As the outage stretched on, Downdetector numbers continued to climb, eventually crossing 30,000 reports in the US and nearing 10,000 in the UK. Many users said songs would start playing only to cut out after a few seconds, while others couldn’t log into their accounts at all.

Spotify acknowledged the issue on its official status page, saying it was “aware of some issues right now” and that teams were actively investigating. However, the company did not immediately share details about what caused the disruption. It also remains unclear whether the outage was linked to a broader infrastructure problem, such as issues with major cloud providers.

By later in the day, Spotify appeared to be partially accessible again for some users, with the app loading after refreshes. Still, reports of ongoing problems suggested the fix wasn’t fully rolled out everywhere, especially in the US and UK.

Unsurprisingly, frustrated users took to social media to vent. Complaints ranged from interrupted workouts to ruined commutes, with many questioning the reliability of a paid service going down without warning. “I’m paying too much for this not to work,” one user wrote, while others joked about being left “alone with their thoughts” during the outage.

For now, Spotify hasn’t confirmed whether the issue is fully resolved, but the service appears to be gradually stabilizing. If you’re still seeing problems, a restart or brief wait may help, though users are clearly hoping outages like this don’t become a regular playlist interruption.
