Steam Deck Beta Client Update Brings Xbox Controller And Crash Fixes
Valve has released a new Steam Deck Beta Client update to users on the Preview and Beta channels, introducing several fixes and usability improvements. Valve re-released the update shortly after its initial rollout to resolve a regression that caused client crashes, and the company acted quickly to stabilize the build.
Steam Deck beta update improves controller pairing and accessibility
One of the key changes focuses on Bluetooth controller pairing. The Steam Deck now detects when users attempt to connect an Xbox controller running outdated firmware that cannot pair correctly. The system shows a warning message, helping users avoid repeated connection failures and confusion.
Valve also refined accessibility controls for external gamepads. The Screen Reader’s Stop Talking function now maps to the X button, which keeps the Quick Access Menu accessible when using a controller. This adjustment improves navigation for users who rely on screen reader features during gameplay.
New chat reporting tools and Steam Link fix
The update adds new safety tools for Steam group chats. Users can now report suspicious or harassing messages directly from the chat window, along with options to block or unfriend other users. These changes make it easier to manage unwanted interactions without leaving the conversation.
Valve also fixed a Steam Link issue where touch controls could not move the mouse cursor between monitors. This fix improves the experience for players using multi-monitor setups while streaming games.
Available only on Beta and Preview channels
This release applies only to the Steam Deck Beta and Preview Client channels and has not reached the Stable public version yet. Users who want early access to these changes must opt into Valve’s testing channels.
