Subnautica 2's Opt-in Experimental Branch Releases on Xbox & Steam
Unknown Worlds has launched an opt-in Experimental branch for Subnautica 2. The new branch is available on Steam and Xbox. It allows players to test unfinished updates before they reach the main Early Access build.
Subnautica 2 experimental branch launches ahead of official release for players to test early access content
Unknown Worlds warns that Experimental builds can contain serious bugs. Some problems could even break a game. Players are also advised against becoming attached to saves. Experimental and main-branch saves are completely separate.
That means saves can’t move between the two versions. Switching back to the regular build should restore the main saves. The branch also will not receive daily builds. Instead, Unknown Worlds plans to upload previews shortly before major updates reach everyone. Smaller patches and fixes may also appear through Experimental.
How to join the Subnautica 2 Experimental branch
Steam players can right-click Subnautica 2 in their library. Open Properties, select Game Versions & Betas, then choose Experimental. Finally, Steam will automatically begin downloading the required update.
Meanwhile, Xbox players need the Xbox Insider Hub. The program requires users to be at least 18 years and own Subnautica 2. An active Game Pass Ultimate subscription also qualifies. After joining Xbox Insider, players can find Subnautica 2 Experimental (Public Test) under Previews.
The update can then be installed after registration completes. Unknown Worlds says the branch should help spot issues and bugs before updates reach the wider player base. Players can also report bugs and provide feedback through the studio’s support resources
