The U.S. Department of War Just Put ChatGPT Mil Into Its Secure AI Platform

The U.S. Department of War has officially launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil on GenAI.mil. The deployment brings ChatGPT into a secure environment built for Department-wide use.

ChatGPT Mil is built for secure work

The department says ChatGPT Mil is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5. That makes the deployment different from ordinary commercial ChatGPT access.

The service focuses on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. More features are reportedly planned as the deployment expands. ChatGPT Mil is designed for document-heavy tasks across the department. These include planning, policy work, logistics, and administration.

The department says the platform can scale beyond 3 million personnel. That could make this one of the larger enterprise AI deployments announced by a government organization.

The launch also marks the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership established between the department and OpenAI in 2025.

GenAI.mil is becoming a multi-model hub

ChatGPT Mil joins other frontier AI capabilities already available through GenAI.mil. The department describes this as a multi-model ecosystem for its workforce.

That setup may give personnel access to different AI systems for different tasks. It also signals a broader push toward making generative AI part of routine government operations.

At a time when governments are rapidly adopting AI, security remains a major concern. The IL5 accreditation addresses one layer of that challenge, while actual usage will determine its wider impact.

The department says the deployment should reduce routine workloads. It may also free personnel for more critical projects across the Joint Force.
