Valve Officially Discontinues Index VR Headset After 7 Years, Cuts Prices by 20%

Valve Index is officially heading into retirement, marking the end of an era for the company’s first major VR headset. After seven years on the market, Valve has stopped production and discounted remaining hardware by 20%. However, existing owners can continue using their headsets.

Valve Index is discontinued, but remaining stock is cheaper

Valve confirmed the news today and said that remaining Index headsets, controllers, and accessories will remain available at reduced prices while supplies last. The headset now costs $399.20, down from its previous $499 price. The replacement left controller has dropped from $149 to $119.20. Meanwhile, the replacement tether now costs $103.20, compared with its original $129 price.

However, availability varies by region. The US store no longer lists the right replacement controller or SteamVR base stations. Buyers should check the official Valve Index store page before purchasing anything.

There is another catch for anyone considering the discounted headset. The Index requires compatible SteamVR base stations for tracking and connects to a PC through a wired connection. With essential components unavailable directly from Valve, building a complete setup could become difficult.

Steam Frame defines a new direction for Valve VR

The discontinuation follows Valve’s move toward its newer Steam Frame headset. Unlike the tethered Index, Steam Frame supports standalone gameplay and wireless PC streaming. It also uses inside-out tracking rather than relying on external base stations.

As of Valve Index users, the good news is that Valve has not announced an end to software support. The company says the Index remains supported on Steam and SteamVR, with no changes for current owners. Anyone needing repairs or hardware assistance can still visit Steam Support. However, replacement parts may become harder to find as remaining inventory disappears.
