How to fix the VLShellRes.dll could not be found error

The VLShellRes.dll could not be found error occurs after uninstalling an antivirus such as McAfee or Symantec Endpoint Protection. The pop-up window with the error appears when you try to right-click any file and that’s because the antivirus is trying to scan it. Here’s how to get rid of it for good.

How do I fix the VLShellRes.dll could not be found error?

1. Remove the leftover keys from the Registry

  1. Press Win + R to start the Run console, type regedit and press Enter.
  2. Click on File > Export and save a copy of your Registry in case something goes wrong.
  3. Now, go to the following locations and delete the values from the keys:

  4. Now, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved and delete the {8BEEE74D-455E-4616-A97A-F6E86C317F32} value from the right.
  5. Restart your PC after the changes.

2. Reregister the VLShellRes.dll file

  1. Click the Start button, type cmd and select Run as administrator from the results.
  2. Run the following command and replace the path and version with the one you have on your PC: Regsvr32.exe <SEP client install path\version>\Bin64\vpshell2.dll
  3. Here’s an example of a complete command for 14.3 RU4: regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\14.3.7393.4000.105\Bin64\vpshell2.dll"
