Windows 11 Canary Update KB5077240 Adds Built-In Network Speed Test and More

KB5077221 canary channel

Microsoft is rolling out a fresh update for users in the Canary Channel. According to the release notes for Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1673 (KB5077240), the company is adding several helpful features, ranging from a native connection speed checker to an expanded dark mode experience.

Integrated Network Speed Testing and File Explorer Enhancements

Checking your internet connection usually involves opening a browser and navigating to a third-party website. With this new build, Windows 11 introduces a built-in network speed test directly accessible from the taskbar. You can open it right from the Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray.

This feature measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections to help you quickly check performance and troubleshoot any sudden drop-offs.

File Explorer is also getting a welcome visual tweak. Microsoft continues to refine the dark mode experience across the operating system. In this update, the Folder Options dialog now features a consistent dark mode appearance, eliminating the jarring flash of bright backgrounds when digging into your file settings.

Remote Server Tools for Arm64 and Expanded Backup Features

Let us break down a few other major additions. The update finally brings support for Remote Server Administration Tools to Windows 11 Arm64 devices. IT administrators can now install utilities like Active Directory Domain Services and Server Manager as optional features directly from the Settings menu.

The first sign-in restore experience is also expanding to become part of Windows Backup for Organizations. What this really means is that Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices and Cloud PCs will automatically restore user settings and applications during the first sign-in, making device upgrades and migrations much smoother for enterprise environments.

These Canary additions come shortly after other recent feature drops, such as the Windows 11 beta updates that introduce independent volume controls and enhanced script security.
