Windows 11 Eco Mode Could Wipe Your NVIDIA Driver

Windows 11 may silently remove a discrete GPU driver if the graphics card stays disabled for several weeks, according to a Windows 11 user who encountered the issue on an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14.

The laptop, equipped with an NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, had remained in Eco Mode for several weeks. ASUS Eco Mode power-gates the discrete GPU, which can make the hardware appear physically disconnected from Windows.

Windows Plug and Play cleanup may remove the driver

The issue appears related to pnpclean.dll, a Windows maintenance component that removes drivers for hardware Windows considers no longer connected.

According to the user’s analysis of setupapi.dev.log, the NVIDIA GPU received a 15-day timeout. Once that period expired, Windows removed the device and later deleted its unused NVIDIA driver package.

The reported default cleanup timeout is 30 days, although the NVIDIA hardware in this case apparently used a shorter 15-day period.

It remains unclear whether this behavior only affects ASUS ROG laptops or whether other PCs with similar GPU power-management features could experience it.

The GPU returns as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

Switching the laptop from Eco Mode back to Standard Mode makes the discrete GPU visible again, but Windows may identify it as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of the NVIDIA GPU.

The affected user also encountered a Code 10 error in Device Manager, while NVIDIA software reported that the installed driver was incompatible.

Reinstalling the NVIDIA graphics driver restored normal GPU functionality.

AMD GPUs may face the same issue. The user believes the cleanup mechanism could affect AMD graphics hardware as well, and other users have reportedly seen similar behavior on older ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 models.

G-Helper adds a warning for ASUS users

G-Helper, a lightweight ASUS laptop control utility, has now added a warning about the potential driver cleanup.

The utility recommends disabling the automatic cleanup process from an elevated PowerShell window with the following command:

Set-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Device Driver Packages' -Name Autorun -Value 0

This stops the automatic cleanup pass from removing unused device-driver packages.

Another option involves periodically switching the laptop back to Standard Mode before the 15 to 30-day cleanup period expires. Windows can then detect the discrete GPU again and reset the cleanup timer.
