Steam, one of the world’s biggest hubs for PC gaming, has released the Hardware Survey for January 2025, and it may come as a surprise for many, but Windows 11 is now the most popular Windows version for PC systems focused on gaming.
Sitting comfortably at 53%, Windows 11 is the top choice for PC gamers, followed by Windows 10 at 43%, and Linux at 2%.
This makes sense: Windows 11 has the architecture to perform better in games, and its many capabilities, such as Auto Super Resolution, help gamers get a better image and frame quality in video games, as well as putting just enough stress on the CPUs, which means gaming PCs with Windows 11 onboard usually last longer than the other ones.
Windows 11 has always been better suited for gaming than the rest of the Windows versions: it’s efficient, doesn’t eat more resources than it needs, and supports all games.
The survey conducted by Steam revealed, however, other surprising aspects. Believe it or not, 16 GB of RAM is the most popular choice amongst PC gamers, followed by 32 GB, and ultimately 8 GB; when it comes to video card memory, the 8 GB one is still the king, but users are migrating towards 12 GB. Some prefer only 6 GB. RTX 3060, RTX 4060 Laptop, and RTX 4060 are the most popular GPUs. Regarding CPU cores, PC gamers usually go for 6 cores, followed by 8 cores, and then ultimately 4 cores.
What do these pieces of data tell us? Most PC gamers have decent PC systems, but most of them are on Windows 11 already. This is further proof that you don’t need the latest gear to install Windows 11 and play your games there.
Assuming Microsoft will somehow let users bypass the TPM requirement for installing the OS (it already published a solution, but it deleted it shortly), Windows 11 has every chance to take all of the Windows 10 gamers out there.
