Windows 11 KB5124006 & KB5124010 Fixes Broken File History Backups

Yesterday, Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5124006 for version 26H1. And if you’re among those who have been hit by a bug that could stop File History from backing up or restoring files to external drives and network locations, you shouldn’t skip it.

According to Microsoft, affected PCs could show the “Reconnect your drive” message even when the backup drive was already connected and working properly. The issue could affect both backups and restores, making File History appear as though the configured drive had suddenly disappeared.

Microsoft had already acknowledged a File History problem affecting the September 2026 security updates, with the issue added to the KB5124008 release notes. The company said File History could stop working after installing the September security updates.

At the time, Microsoft said File History could fail even when a compatible external or network location was available, while some users reported that existing backups were still visible but new backups would no longer run.

Do note that the KB5124010 update released for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 also includes the File History fix. However, installing this specific update is causing some games to crash or fail to launch after users install the optional preview update. We hope Microsoft takes note of the issue and releases a fix for it. As of writing this, the company hasn’t acknowledged the issue.
