Windows 11 KB5124008 Fixes Mouse Cursor & Animation Issues Triggered by KB5120998

Following the release of the Windows 11 KB5120998 update on August 27, 2026, many users complained that their mouse cursor settings suddenly went back to default. The issue affected non-English Windows installations after the aforementioned update.

After users flooded Reddit and Microsoft Community forums with complaints, the company acknowledged the issue. If you have been among those affected, the good news is that Microsoft has finally fixed the issue with the Windows 11 September 2026 Patch Tuesday update.

In the Windows Release Health Dashboard, Microsoft has now marked the issue as resolved. The September KB5124008 patch’s changelog also confirmed the same. Microsoft noted, “This update addresses an issue that prevented customized mouse cursor settings, including pointer style and color, from displaying correctly. Selected cursor options and colors now work as expected.”

The company recommends installing the latest security update. Besides resolving this mouse customization problem, the update includes other security improvements and issue fixes. It should be noted that the issue only affected client versions of Windows 11, especially versions 25H2 and 24H2.

If your customized cursor or animation settings were reset, installing KB5124008 should address the underlying problem. After updating, you can restore your preferred mouse settings through Windows Mouse Properties.

At the time, Microsoft said the problem was linked to code components used by non-English Windows installations. In affected locales, those components failed to load the saved mouse settings correctly.
