Windows 11 May Soon Let Users Choose Their User Folder Name During Setup

improved setup experience windows

Microsoft has released Windows 11 updates KB5079458 and KB5079464 to the Beta and Dev Insider channels, introducing a useful new feature during system setup.

The updates allow users to manually choose the name of their user folder, giving more control over how Windows organizes personal directories.

Windows 11 finally lets users choose their user folder name

In current Windows 11 installations, the system automatically creates a user folder during setup based on the Microsoft account email or profile name.

This behavior often results in awkward or shortened folder names, especially when the email address contains long strings or unusual formatting.

While many users never notice the issue, the folder name can become inconvenient when working with scripts, development tools, or command-line utilities.

New setup option makes customization easier

As reported by Neowin, Microsoft has added a new option directly in the Windows setup interface that allows users to set a custom user folder name.

During the stage where users assign a name to the PC, a new “Show user folder name” option appears.

Selecting this option reveals a field where users can manually enter the desired folder name.

The custom name must follow standard Windows naming rules and can include letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores.

If the option is skipped, Windows continues the setup process and automatically generates the default folder name as it currently does.

Earlier versions required command-line workarounds

Previous Insider versions of this feature required users to rename the user folder manually through Command Prompt.

That process was complicated and often confusing for less experienced users, since it involved system commands and manual changes.

The latest update simplifies the process by integrating the option directly into the graphical setup interface.

The feature first appeared in Insider testing last year

Microsoft initially began experimenting with custom user folder naming for Windows Insiders last fall.

The release of KB5079458 and KB5079464 expands testing of the feature across the Beta and Dev channels.

Alongside this improvement, the updates also introduce enhancements to Windows driver policy management.

For users interested in more experimental features, Microsoft is also testing additional changes in the Canary channel through update KB5079452, which brings improvements to Windows pen settings.
