Microsoft remains in the spotlight following its latest financial results, and the company has now confirmed another major milestone for its flagship operating system.

As reported by Neowin, Windows 11 has officially reached more than 1 billion users worldwide, marking a significant adoption achievement just a few years after launch.

Microsoft confirmed the milestone during its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call, where it also revealed that overall revenue increased by 16.7% year over year. Windows 11 reached the 1 billion user mark in 1,576 days since its initial release in October 2021.

Windows 11 Beats Windows 10 Adoption Timeline

The adoption pace puts Windows 11 ahead of its predecessor. Windows 10 took approximately 1,706 days to reach the same milestone, meaning Windows 11 achieved it around 130 days faster.

Microsoft attributed part of this acceleration to the approaching end of support for Windows 10 and a more assertive upgrade strategy. The company has actively encouraged both consumers and enterprises to move to the newer platform, supported by new hardware cycles and deeper integration of modern system features.

Despite the rapid growth of Windows 11, Windows 10 continues to maintain a strong presence in certain markets. Recent figures indicate that about 48% of users in Germany still rely on Windows 10, highlighting regional differences in upgrade adoption.

While Windows 11 has crossed the 1 billion user threshold, other industry reports suggest its overall market share has recently declined. Looking ahead, Microsoft is preparing a major platform transition later this year, with indications that users could see two different Windows builds become available before the end of the year.

The move signals that Microsoft’s Windows strategy remains in flux, even as the operating system reaches record-breaking adoption levels.
