Windows 11 has reached a notable point in the busy world of technology. For the first time since it was launched in October 2021, this operating system has surpassed the 35% market share milestone in October 2024, growing 5% in just three months.
According to the latest Statcounter data, Windows 11 reached its highest percentage ever, 35.58%, marking a rise of almost 5 points in just three months. On the other hand, Windows 10 has fallen to 60.95%.
Windows 10, which will be nearing its end of life in approximately a year, will probably see a quicker decrease in market share. However, the Extended Security Update program and services by third parties such as 0patch are ready to maintain Windows 10 for many years. Plus, the Redmond-based tech giant announced a fee of $30 for those who want to get ESU for 1 year. The company says this decision will help users transition to Windows 11 better.
Regarding Windows 11, the excitement around Copilot+ PCs and news of additional ARM-powered devices from Qualcomm and its partners might help this system attract even more users. This could be especially true since we are nearing back-to-school time.
However, even with these advancements and urging for newer versions, it’s interesting to see that some older Windows versions still have a particular spot in the hearts of many users. Windows 7, for example, maintains its position as the third most popular Windows version, having a 2.62% market share.
Close behind are Windows 8.1 and Windows XP, with shares of 0.19% and 0.28% respectively. This continuing use of older operating systems shows the wide-ranging demands and choices of Windows users worldwide.
Remember that even though Statcounter’s reports help understand the direction of market trends, they aren’t exact. Only Microsoft can give you the most exact data on how much their operating systems occupy in markets. However, this company does not reveal detailed information about market division.
Windows operating systems have changed a lot over time, and the phrase “the only constant is change” seems appropriate. Windows 11’s market share shows how much people are moving towards more modern, safe, and efficient computing experiences.
However, seeing older versions tells us that Microsoft has difficulties getting users to accept the newest technology while offering improvement opportunities. Suppose you favor the advanced aspects of Windows 11 or keep using an older edition for particular motives.
In that case, the variety among Windows operating systems shows that our digital society has different user requirements and tastes.
