Windows Server 2026 Gets Native NVMe Performance Boost With KB5066835
Microsoft has released a native NVMe performance feature in Windows Server 2025 that targets one of the biggest bottlenecks in modern server deployments: storage overhead. If you run NVMe-based servers, this update can unlock a noticeable performance uplift with minimal configuration.
Microsoft first signaled plans to improve NVMe support in Windows Server 2025 earlier this year. The October 2025 Patch Tuesday update, KB5066835, finally delivers that promise. The update introduces a redesigned storage path that optimizes how Windows Server communicates with NVMe SSDs at a low level.
What changed in Windows Server 2025 NVMe support
Previous Windows Server versions treated most storage devices as SCSI, a standard originally designed for spinning hard drives. While functional, that approach added unnecessary translation layers for NVMe devices, which operate very differently from traditional disks.
Windows Server 2025 removes that default behavior for supported systems. The operating system now interacts with NVMe storage more directly, reducing translation overhead and improving I/O efficiency. As a result, servers can fully exploit the parallelism and low latency that NVMe hardware offers.
Performance gains you can expect
According to Microsoft, early real-world testing shows substantial performance improvements:
- NVMe workloads can achieve up to 80 percent higher IOPS compared to older storage stacks
- CPU usage drops during heavy storage operations, leaving more compute power available for applications
- Latency improves under mixed read/write workloads, especially on high-end enterprise NVMe drives
These gains matter most for database servers, virtualization hosts, and high-throughput application servers that rely on fast local storage.
How to enable the NVMe feature
Microsoft ships this enhancement as an optional feature. You must enable it manually after installing KB5066835.
To enable it using the Registry, run the following command as an administrator:
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 1176759950 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Alternatively, you can install the related Group Policy MSI and enable the feature through:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > KB5066835 251014_21251 Feature Preview > Windows 11, version 24H2, 25H2
This NVMe optimization forms part of Microsoft’s broader Windows Server 2025 performance strategy. Alongside scalability and efficiency improvements, it positions Server 2025 as a better match for modern data centers that rely heavily on flash storage.
If your servers use NVMe SSDs, installing KB5066835 and enabling this feature can deliver immediate, measurable benefits. If you’re a home user, you should know that KB5066835 fixes gaming performance issues, so don’t miss it.
