Wolverine Game Gets Brutal New Gameplay Reveal Ahead of PS5 Release

marvels wolverine state of play

Sony used its June 2026 State of Play showcase to deliver a major new look at Marvel’s Wolverine, revealing fresh gameplay footage and several new details about Insomniac Games’ upcoming superhero title. While fans already knew the game was targeting a September 15 launch, the presentation confirmed additional story elements, combat systems, accessibility features, and preorder information ahead of release.

PS5 release date and preorders officially confirmed

Marvel’s Wolverine launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. The standard edition will cost $69.99, with preorders now available through the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Direct, and participating retailers.

Logan’s savage hunt for the Reavers takes center stage

The latest trailer focused heavily on Logan’s brutal journey as he hunts down a group of captured mutants. According to Insomniac, the mutants are being targeted by the Reavers, a cybernetic mercenary faction working under billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask, who believes humanity should dominate mutantkind.

The gameplay footage showed a far darker tone than Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Wolverine tears through enemies using brutal claw attacks, stealth ambushes, counters, and close-range combat sequences.

Jean Grey and Team X make huge story debut

One of the biggest reveals from the showcase was the introduction of Jean Grey as a major character in the story. The powerful telekinetic mutant appears to serve as both an ally to Logan and an emerging leader among the captured mutants. Gameplay footage showed the two fighting side-by-side during several combat encounters.

Insomniac also introduced Team X, described as a last-resort mutant strike force that Logan abandoned three years before the events of the game. The trailer hinted that Wolverine eventually reunites with the group as the conflict escalates.

The ending sequence also teased additional enemies, new suits, and more mutant characters. Many fans believe Sabretooth may have appeared briefly during the trailer’s final moments, although Insomniac did not officially confirm the character.

Brutal claw combat and devastating Techniques revealed

Combat appears significantly darker and more violent than Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles. Players can stalk enemies from above, ambush them stealthily, or charge directly into combat using Wolverine’s claws. Fast melee attacks, parries, counters, and cinematic finishing moves were all showcased during the gameplay reveal.

The game also features special combat abilities known as Techniques. Moves such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush allow Logan to unleash devastating attacks against groups of enemies. Critical Strikes act as powerful finishing moves and can be performed either solo or alongside allies like Jean Grey.

Wolverine’s Rage system turns battles into pure chaos

Another major mechanic revolves around Wolverine’s Rage system. Logan builds Rage through combat actions including attacks, parries, and kills. Rage can then be spent on stronger attacks or used to activate his iconic Healing Factor.

At maximum Rage Tier 3, Wolverine enters a stylized black-and-white combat state inspired by Marvel’s Black, White, and Blood comic series. The game also includes a Last Stand mechanic, which activates Logan’s Healing Factor when he is near defeat and gives players one final chance to survive.

Massive cinematic set pieces and accessibility options detailed

Beyond combat, the trailer highlighted several large-scale cinematic action sequences mixed with tighter close-quarters encounters. Insomniac confirmed that the game will launch with extensive accessibility options designed to support players with cognitive, visual, auditory, and motor disabilities.

Overall, Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be one of Sony’s darkest and most violent first-party superhero games to date.

Marvel’s Wolverine was not the only major reveal during State of Play. Sony also unveiled God of War: Laufey, a new entry in the franchise that shifts the focus away from Kratos and onto Faye for the first time in the series.
