[UPDATE] X (Formerly Twitter) Facing Outage, Website and App Down For Many

[UPDATE 1: January 16, 2026 | 21:00 IST] Over on DownDetector, user reports have crossed 77,000. But for me, the app and website are working as I write this.

[ORIGINAL Story] X, formerly known as Twitter, is facing a major outage right now. It came to my notice when I refreshed my feed and hit the error “Cannot retrieve post at this time, please try again later.”

As of publishing, both the website and mobile app failed to load, with many users encountering a blank screen. In past outages, X has sometimes loaded without displaying posts, but this time the service appeared completely inaccessible for many users.

The Independent reports that outage-tracking site DownDetector recorded a sharp spike in problem reports at around 3 PM UK time, or 10 AM Eastern Time. In India, we started seeing it at around 20:45 local time. The surge suggests the disruption was sudden and widespread.

Reports indicate the issue affected users globally and across multiple platforms, including the web version of X as well as its mobile apps.
