Microsoft Announces PlayFab Foundation Mode to Expand Cross-Platform Game Services

Microsoft has announced a new developer offering that focuses on simplifying cross-platform game development. Announced during GDC 2026, the Foundation Mode for PlayFab is new program that gives Xbox developers access to core backend services across multiple gaming platforms at no additional cost.

PlayFab Foundation Mode is all about cross-platform development

Microsoft says any game shipping on Xbox can use PlayFab’s core services across platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games Store, and mobile devices. Developers don’t need an Azure subscription or payment setup to begin. Once a studio commits to releasing its game on Xbox, the PlayFab services can be used during development, testing, and after launch.

The offering includes seven core service pillars designed to support modern live-service games.

Identity allows developers to create unified player accounts that work across different platforms. Meanwhile, Progression is all about supporting cross-platform saves, player profiles, and statistics, ensuring players can continue progress regardless of where they play. Community services include cross-platform friends lists, guild systems, leaderboards, and real-time voice and text chat. Multiplayer is all about offering matchmaking, lobbies, and networking powered by Microsoft Azure’s global infrastructure.

Other services include live service management tools for title updates and notifications, economy systems for in-game currencies and items, and telemetry through Game Data Stream to help developers analyze player behavior. Last but not least, PlayFab Foundation Mode is entering public preview for new Xbox titles, with developers able to request access through PlayFab Game Manager.

Speaking of Xbox and Game Pass, let’s not forget that these titles are leaving the Game Pass in April.
