XBOX CTO Explains Why Disc Games Failed During Outage
A major XBOX outage prevented some players from accessing digital and physical games, raising new questions about how much control users retain over disc-based purchases.
The disruption began on Sunday night and lasted until Monday evening. During the incident, users reported problems signing in, launching apps, opening the XBOX Store, and accessing their game libraries.
Physical XBOX Games Also Stopped Working
The most concerning reports involved physical games. Some users said their consoles would not launch supported disc-based titles, even when they tried to play offline.
XBOX technology chief Scott Van Vliet told The Verge that licensing checks should not prevent supported physical games from working without an internet connection.
He also described the 15-hour XBOX outage as unacceptable and confirmed that Microsoft was investigating why saved licenses failed for some players.
Microsoft’s documentation states that games with full disc support should remain playable offline. XBOX One and XBOX Series X|S discs contain encrypted licensing data that confirms ownership when users insert them into a console.
Saved Game Licenses Failed During the Outage
Microsoft initially linked the outage to a problem involving an external licensing service. XBOX later found that some consoles could not correctly use previously saved game entitlements.
Entitlements act as digital records that confirm which games, add-ons, and other content an account can access. Consoles also rely on saved entitlements when operating offline.
That failure explains why the outage affected more than digital downloads. Even consoles disconnected from the internet could not launch certain games because they failed to read the locally stored licensing information.
Microsoft plans to release an update designed to prevent the same problem from happening again. The company has not provided full technical details about the planned fix.
XBOX Outage Raises Game Ownership Concerns
The incident has renewed concerns about physical game preservation. Players often buy discs because they expect them to work without depending on remote servers, account systems, or online licensing checks.
However, the outage showed that physical ownership does not always guarantee immediate access. A failure involving saved digital entitlements can still prevent a disc from launching.
The issue comes as publishers and console makers continue moving toward digital distribution. Sony reportedly plans to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs in 2028, while some industry observers believe XBOX could eventually make a similar move.
Microsoft now needs to show that supported physical games and converted digital licenses will remain accessible when XBOX network services fail. The promised update will face close scrutiny from players who expect a purchased disc to work regardless of an online outage.
