Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming Hours Get Capped in November With New Paid Playtime Option
Xbox is capping Game Pass cloud gaming hours starting November. The new system gives subscribers fixed monthly hours, while extra playtime becomes separately purchasable. Xbox says only 4% of Game Pass subscribers are expected to be affected.
Game Pass Cloud Gaming gets new limits
The biggest change lands across three XBOX Game Pass plans. The Game Pass Ultimate subscribers receive 15 cloud gaming hours each month. Premium members get 10 hours, while Essential subscribers receive just five hours. Eligible subscribers currently stream without these monthly limits.
Once those hours are finished, players can purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox has not revealed the pricing yet. The company says pricing, available hours, and cloud features may vary between markets. More information will arrive before November.
Xbox also admits the change could mean higher costs for some players. It says cloud gaming becomes more expensive as usage and playtime increase.
You can enjoy cloud gaming without XBOX Game Pass, too
In the month of November, Microsoft will also introduce another option for players who skip XBOX Game Pass entirely. Players can purchase cloud playtime and stream eligible games they already own.
That could make occasional cloud gaming easier without requiring a recurring subscription. Xbox also highlights another useful angle for Xbox One owners. Cloud streaming can let Xbox One players access eligible games built for Xbox Series X|S. That could delay the need for a hardware upgrade.
Xbox says more games will get cloud support throughout the year. The company will reveal extra-hour pricing, eligible games, and availability in November. The move comes after Xbox expanded cloud gaming across devices and markets. Xbox currently promotes cloud streaming across mobile, tablets, TVs, and VR headsets.
