XBOX Handheld Could Arrive in 2027, While Project Helix May Cost $1,800 in 2028
Microsoft is reportedly planning to launch its next-generation XBOX handheld during the 2027 holiday season, followed by its Project Helix console in late 2028. The upcoming console could cost as much as $1,800.
According to a new Fortune report, XBOX CEO Asha Sharma is overseeing development of both devices as Microsoft looks to strengthen its gaming hardware business.
Project Helix could reportedly cost between $1,200 and $1,800 unless Microsoft decides to subsidize the hardware. However, this range appears to be an estimate rather than an official pricing target.
Microsoft has not confirmed either release window or the potential pricing.
Microsoft reportedly gives Xbox more control over its handheld OS
The report also describes disagreements between XBOX and Windows engineers over the operating system for the upcoming handheld.
Windows executives reportedly pushed for a lightweight version of Windows Home, while the XBOX team wanted greater control over the software to optimize gaming performance.
The XBOX division has reportedly gained more influence over the handheld’s operating system development, although collaboration with Windows remains necessary.
Project Helix development is reportedly accelerating
Sharma has reportedly been working closely with Microsoft’s hardware designers, including Carl Ledbetter, to review Project Helix prototypes.
People familiar with the project claim that Microsoft has moved engineering deadlines forward by several months. The company is also exploring partnerships for its next-generation hardware.
The push comes amid declining XBOX hardware sales. Third-party estimates cited in the report suggest that current XBOX consoles have sold only slightly more than one-third as many units as Sony’s PlayStation 5.
Microsoft’s hardware struggles have become increasingly apparent, with recent figures showing that XBOX sales crashed 33% and reached a historic all-time low.
Project Helix could become Microsoft’s most expensive Xbox console
If the estimated $1,200 to $1,800 price range proves accurate, Project Helix would cost significantly more than any previous XBOX console.
Rising component costs and memory shortages could further complicate Microsoft’s pricing strategy.
Project Helix is expected to offer high-end, PC-class gaming performance while bringing traditional PC functionality closer to the XBOX console experience.
Microsoft has also been working with AMD on gaming technology, with FSR 4.1 confirmed for XBOX Series X and Series S.
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues expanding its gaming subscription service, recently announcing eight new games in the October 2026 Wave 2 XBOX Game Pass lineup.
For now, the reported 2027 handheld launch, 2028 Project Helix release, and potential $1,800 price remain unofficial.
