Xbox's Latest Outage Reportedly Hit Disc Games Too

Xbox’s massive outage may be over for now, but it’s left players with an uncomfortable question of what’s the point of owning a physical game if you still can’t play it during a server outage? While the XBOX Network outage initially appeared to affect digital purchases, Game Pass titles, and sign-ins, the company’s service status page at the time confirmed that “You may have problems playing your digital games right now.” Unfortunately, that problem extended to disc-based games too.

Disc owners say their games were blocked too

As the outage unfolded, Reddit quickly filled with reports from players saying they couldn’t access games they owned on disc. Several users reported receiving error code 0x87e107df, while others said their consoles failed to verify ownership despite the game disc being inserted.

The situation wasn’t identical for everyone, though. Some Reddit users confirmed their physical games continued working normally, while others said only digital titles were affected. A number of players also discovered that consoles already configured as a Home Xbox or running in offline mode behaved differently, suggesting the outage affected certain licensing scenarios more than others.

As of now, the outage has been mitigated. Earlier today, Xbox Support posted on X and noted, “Good news, the earlier Xbox issue should now be mitigated. You should once again be able to launch games, sign in, and complete purchases. Thanks for sticking with us through a long one.”

Later, Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet talked about the 13-hour long outage and said that such a long disruption is unacceptable, that Xbox must do better to support players. He further added that the root cause was a failure in an external licensing service that Xbox relies on for entitlement verification rather than a problem with the console hardware itself.
