Xbox mandates age verification for 18+ games & apps in Australia

Xbox users in Australia are starting to see a new age verification prompt. The change affects access to 18+ rated games and apps through Xbox and Microsoft Stores. The rollout is part of Microsoft’s Australian compliance program. Users who haven’t verified their age may eventually lose access to newly purchased 18+ content.

The prompt tells users that age verification will begin rolling out in late August 2026. It specifically targets adult Xbox accounts attempting to access restricted content.

Microsoft says games and apps users already own will not be affected. However, new purchases involving 18+ ratings may require verification. The company is also asking some users to complete verification before the requirement fully reaches their accounts.

As of now, several verification methods are reportedly available. These include a government-issued ID, email verification, credit card checks, and facial age estimation.

Australia isn’t the first market to receive Microsoft’s age-check system. Similar requirements have already been announced in the UK last year. Microsoft previously indicated that additional regions could follow. This latest rollout suggests that expansion is now continuing. Last but not least, some users in New Zealand have also reportedly encountered related compliance prompts.
